ONE DAY CONFERENCE

WHY DO WE FALL IN LOVEWITH THE ‘OTHER’?

PERSONAL AND PSYCHOANALYTICAL REFLECTIONS

Saturday 24th February, 2007

This conference will explore the personal and social dimension of ‘the Other’.  Our keynote speaker, Dr David Hewison will deliver the opening lecture, based on his paper entitled:  “Whenthe Good ‘Other’ Turns Bad: Reflections on Difficulties in Relating across Difference”.

He will trace his theme through two relationships: Freud and Jung; and his own work with a couple in psycho-analytic psychotherapy. His paper will be followed by small group discussions to end the morning.

In the afternoon, the morning’s themes will form the basis for further presentations and explorations. This will include an analysis of the role of culture in enabling, or disabling us in our search for our ‘unknown selves’. The afternoon will end with a plenary discussion.

David Hewison is Reader in Couple Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Senior Staff Member at the Tavistock Centre for Couple Relationship, and a Jungian analyst with the Society for Analytical Psychology.

Conference Conveners: Orit Beck, Giselle China, John Clare, Geri Dogmetchi, Monique Morris, Edna Sovin, Shula Wilson and Ali Zarbafi.
